What is a freestanding sink?

A floor-standing basin made as a single piece, with plumbing concealed inside the column. It’s the modern take on the pedestal sink.

Do freestanding sinks have storage?

No. You’re trading cabinet space for looks, which is why they suit powder rooms where storage barely matters.

Are pedestal sinks outdated?

The two-piece ceramic kind reads traditional. One-piece stone resin freestanding sinks are a different animal and very much current.

Freestanding Sinks by Badeloft

Badeloft’s freestanding sinks are made from high-quality stone resin. These sinks carry a more natural and refined look compared to other sink materials such as enameled steel, cast iron or porcelain. Stone resin, which is a blend of acrylic polymers with resin, offers a lightweight, yet visually appealing material not unlike natural stone in appearance.

Freestanding Sink Installation

Freestanding sinks are attached to a mounting brace in the wall, with the sink’s base acting as secondary support. To install your sink, follow these steps:

- Preparation

- Shut off the water supply to sink

- Sort out plumbing either by yourself or hire a plumber

- Remove old sink

- Ensure you have extra lag screws and washers ready

- Ensure you have assistance as sinks can be heavy to move

- Install Mounting Brace

- Use a stud finder to locate wall studs to fit the mounting brace

- Mark the height of the sink on the wall

- Cut a hole in the wall at sink height that spans from stud to stud

- Cut a piece of 2×8 board and slide it between the studs

- Patch the wall using drywall and joint compound, then sand the surface smooth

- Install Mounting Bracket

- Check instructions for the height of the bracket

- Hold the bracket against the wall and mark the position for the bracket

- Anchor the bracket with screws and ensure that it is level before you attach it

- If you have no mounting brackets, assemble the sink basin on top of the pedestal.

- Mark the sink’s anchor holes on the wall

- Pre-drill the marks you’ve made and install hanger bolts in the wall and ensure they are about 1 inch from the wall

- Install Drain

Tip: Most sinks do not come with drains or faucets and must be purchased separately

- Carefully clean the inside of your sink basin and its drain hole.

- Roll a quarter of an inch rope of plumber putty and wrap it around the underside of the pop-up drain

- Put the drain flange through the basin’s drain hole, then press the flange down and wipe away excess putty.

- On the other side of the basin, put the gasket and washer onto the drain. Screw the locknut onto the drain and tighten it by hand, ensuring you do not over-tighten

- Attach Trap

- Assemble the basin on top of the pedestal

- Test-fit the trap assembly to the waste pipe in the wall

- Measure the distance from the floor up to the top of the vertical part of the P-trap. Now measure the same distance from the floor up to the pop-up drain’s waste tailpiece. Mark that measurement on the tailpiece. This will be how high up the P-trap should be on the tailpiece.

- Remove the entire trap from the waste pipe.

- Cover the P-trap’s threads with plumber’s tape for a secure, leak-free fit.

- Put the P-trap’s slip-nut and washer over the pop-up’s tailpiece.

- Slide the P-trap up to the mark you made on the tailpiece, then thread the slip-nut onto the P-trap. Tighten by hand. Use a wrench or water-pump pliers to tighten the nut another 1/4 turn.

- Install Faucet

- Roll a 3/4-inch thick rope of plumber’s putty. Wrap the putty rope around the underside of the flanges of the faucet’s valves and spout.

- Insert the faucet pieces into their respective holes in the sink basin. Press the flanges down and wipe away any putty that pushes out.

- Thread the provided gasket and nut onto the underside of each of the faucet’s fittings. Tighten the nuts by hand, then finish tightening with a wrench.

- Mount Sink

- Carefully move the sink and pedestal back against the wall.

- Mount the sink basin on the mounting bracket.

- If you don’t have a mounting bracket, line up the basin’s mounting holes with the hanger bolts you installed earlier. Push the sink against the wall snugly so the hanger bolts extend through the mounting holes.

- Check the level of the sink.

- Secure the sink with cap nuts and washers. Tighten by hand, then finish tightening with a wrench.

- Connect Plumbing

- Wrap the threads of the trap’s elbow with the plumber’s tape.

- Attach the washer and elbow to the P-trap again. Tighten the elbow’s nut by hand and finish tightening with a wrench or water-pump pliers.

- Attach the faucet valve to the angle-stop plumbing in your wall with an acorn-head supply tube and compression nuts. As always, tighten the nuts by hand and then finish tightening with a wrench.

- Repeat the above step for the other faucet valve and angle stop.

- Attach the faucet spot’s lift rod to the actuator arm of the pop-up drain. For this step, consult your manufacturer’s instructions for your specific faucet and drain.

- Slide the trap cover over the waste pipe. Screw the elbow into the cover.

- Turn the water on and check your connections. If leaks are present, try re-securing your connections or adding plumber’s tape to threads as necessary.

9 Secure base to the floor

- Finish installing the sink by bolting the pedestal to the floor with bolts or nuts

- Don’t over-tighten, or you may crack the pedestal
