Wet Rooms and Curbless Showers: A Spec Guide to Slope, Waterproofing and Cost

    This is Badeloft's planning guide to wet rooms and curbless showers, built around the numbers rather than the renderings.

    Almost every guide on this topic repeats the same single specification, a quarter inch of fall per foot, and then stops. The rules that actually decide whether a curbless floor works are published. They are just published somewhere homeowners never look: the Tile Council of North America's installation handbook, details B421C and B422C, and the ANSI A118.10 standard those details reference. This guide is built around what those documents require, because the gap between "a quarter inch per foot" and the rest of the standard is where most curbless showers go wrong.

    Wet room and curbless shower get used interchangeably, including by Google, so this covers both: the full wet room, where the entire bathroom is waterproofed and the shower has no boundary at all, and the curbless shower, a zero threshold entry inside an otherwise ordinary bathroom.

    If you are mid remodel and stuck between the two, the decision is more structural than it looks and it gets made earlier than you think. If you are planning for a parent moving in, or for yourselves in fifteen years, this is the one bathroom choice that only gets more expensive to reverse. If your bathroom sits on an upper floor, there is a section below that you should read before you talk to anyone.     By the end you will know the exact fall your floor needs, how far past the shower the waterproofing has to travel, why your drain choice has already decided your tile size, what has to happen underneath the floor and what that costs, and how to keep the room from being cold, which is the complaint people who live with these actually make.

    It is grouped into five parts: what you are actually building, the floor, the water, the comfort problems nobody warns you about, and the money.

    Start with the part most guides skip, which is that the two things in the title are not the same build.

    What a Wet Room Is, and How It Differs From a Curbless Shower

    A wet room is a bathroom where the entire floor and the lower walls are waterproofed as one continuous surface, and the shower drains through that floor with no tray and no enclosure. A curbless shower is narrower: a zero threshold shower area inside an otherwise ordinary bathroom, where the waterproofed zone stops a defined distance past the shower and the rest of the room is a normal floor. Every wet room contains a curbless shower. Most curbless showers are not wet rooms.

    That distinction is not pedantry. It changes how much of your floor gets torn up, how much membrane you buy, and whether the toilet paper stays dry.

    Three builds people call by one name

    The full wet room. The whole floor is tanked and slopes to a single drain. There is no panel and no boundary. This is the most open, the most expensive, and the most demanding of the ventilation and heating that come later in this guide.

    The curbless shower with a panel. The shower zone and a defined margin around it are tanked and sloped. A fixed glass panel does the containment work a curb used to do. The rest of the bathroom is a conventional flat floor. This is what most people actually want when they say wet room, and it is the build that fails least often.

    The low curb. A ramped threshold of roughly half an inch to two inches. Visually almost flush, structurally far simpler, and still wheelchair-difficult, so it is a compromise on access rather than a solution to it.

    In a conventional build, a shower tray is the thing holding the water in. Take the tray away and the floor structure has to do that job instead, which is why everything below reads more like a specification than a style guide.

    The accessibility case, in real numbers

    A curb is a trip hazard and a hard stop for a wheelchair. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design size a transfer shower at 36 by 36 inches and a roll-in shower at 30 by 60 inches, with grab bars mounted 33 to 36 inches above the floor. Those are public accommodation rules rather than residential building code, so nobody will make you meet them in your own house. They are still the numbers occupational therapists work from, and they are the reason a curbless entry is the one bathroom decision that gets steadily more expensive to reverse the longer you wait.

    The Slope Math That Decides Whether Water Stays Where You Put It

    The floor falls a quarter inch for every foot of run toward the drain. That is what the tile standard specifies for a curbless receptor and it has not changed in years. What the guides leave out is what that figure adds up to in a real bathroom, and what your drain position does to it.

    A shower five feet deep with a linear drain along the back wall drops 1.25 inches from the entry edge down to the drain. That is the entire vertical budget for the build. The mortar bed, the membrane, the thinset and the tile all have to fit inside it, and so does the recess in the floor structure underneath.

    Two things follow from where the drain sits. A round point drain in the middle of the shower needs the floor to fall from four directions at once, so the tile setter is screeding four separate planes that all have to meet cleanly at one fitting. A linear drain at one wall needs a single plane falling in one direction. That difference sounds like a detail. It is the most consequential choice in the whole build, and the next section explains why.

    Two rules sit alongside the fall itself, and both get skipped. The slope has to meet the level floor at the entry with a gentle radius rather than an abrupt change of angle, or you have built a small ramp people can feel with their heel. And the high point of the finished floor has to sit outside the shower area, not at its edge. If the highest point of your floor is the shower threshold, any water that escapes the zone has nowhere to go except into the room.

    Picture a couple converting a 1990s alcove tub into a five foot curbless shower. Their tile setter runs the fall correctly and lands at 1.25 inches, then finishes the rest of the bathroom dead level right up to the shower edge. The slope is textbook. But the highest point of the floor is now the shower entry, so the first time a shoulder blocks the spray, the water that clears the opening finds a flat floor and no reason to come back. The fall was right. The high point was in the wrong place.

    Where the Waterproofing Has to Stop, and Why That Is Farther Than You Think

    The bonded waterproof membrane has to run continuously from the drain, through every change of plane, up the walls to the full height of the tile, and then out across the floor and walls for a full 12 inches past the high point of the shower floor. Not to the edge of the shower. Twelve inches beyond the point where the floor stops falling.

    That last clause is the one that gets skipped, and it is the single most useful sentence in this guide. ANSI A118.10 governs the membrane itself, whether sheet or liquid applied. The Tile Council of North America's curbless receptor details, B421C for a clamping ring drain and B422C for a bonding flange drain, govern where that membrane goes. Together they say the protected area is larger than the shower, because in a curbless build the wet area is larger than the shower. Take away the curb and you have removed the thing that used to define the boundary. The membrane has to define it instead.

    The same details make a second point homeowners almost never hear. A secondary drain outside the shower area may be required, and the location of the floor's high point becomes critical precisely when one is not installed. Read that the way the standard means it: water escaping the zone is expected behaviour in a curbless build, not a defect. The design is supposed to have an answer for it.

    There is a simple way to test whether your job is being built to this. Ask which detail the shower follows. A tile setter who does curbless work will say B421C or B422C without pausing, and will tell you which membrane system they are bonding to. One who cannot name a detail is building from memory, and memory is exactly where the twelve inch rule goes to die.

    Your Drain Type Already Decided Your Tile Size

    A round point drain caps your shower floor tile at about four inches, and two inch mosaic is the safer call. A linear drain lets you run 15 inch and larger formats. This is a rule from the tile standard, not a matter of taste, and almost nobody tells you before you have already fallen in love with a tile.

    The reason is the four planes from the previous section. A large tile is rigid and flat. Four slope planes converging on one drain are neither. Trying to lay a big format across that geometry produces lippage, the small height differences between tile edges that you feel with a bare foot and see the moment sunlight hits the floor at an angle. Small tile flexes across the geometry because each piece only has to sit on a tiny slice of it. A single-plane linear drain floor has no such problem, which is the real reason large format tile and linear drains keep appearing in the same photographs.

    Grout is doing a second job here, and it is worth knowing before you resent the grout lines. Grout is the non-slip part of a tile floor. More lines per square foot means more traction. The trade is that more grout also means more cleaning, and owner threads are consistent that a mosaic wet room floor is not the low-maintenance surface the marketing suggests.

    Say you fall for a 24 inch porcelain plank in a showroom, then let the plumber set a round drain in the middle of the shower because that is where the rough-in already sat. Those two decisions cannot both be honoured. Either the tile gets cut down to mosaic inside the shower and the floor reads as two different rooms, or the drain moves to the wall and the rough-in changes. Deciding the drain first costs nothing. Deciding it second costs a plumber's day and a repatch.

    What the Floor Has to Give Up Underneath

    A curbless shower floor sits lower than the floor around it, and that depth has to come out of the structure. On a concrete slab it comes out of the mortar topping and costs almost nothing. On wood joists it comes out of the framing, and that is where retrofit budgets go to die.

    On a joisted floor the sequence is specific. The subfloor, a nominal three quarter inch sheet, 23/32 of an inch actual, comes off the tops of the joists inside the shower footprint and is recut to fit between them, then supported on blocking or a manufacturer's product fixed to the sides of the joists. The joist tops are never notched. You also need somewhere for the plumbing to live: a two inch drain and its trap need several inches of vertical space below the subfloor, and the range is wider than most guides admit. A low profile linear drain can work with roughly four inches. A conventional point drain with a full P-trap assembly can want ten or more. That spread is one of the better arguments for a linear drain in a retrofit, and it is a number to get from the specific drain manufacturer before anyone frames anything.

    One thing worth knowing about the source material: the tile standard does not cover this part. The handbook has methods for the receptor and the membrane, and explicitly no method for the framing, deferring instead to the joist manufacturer. So the document you can hold a tile setter to stops at the subfloor. Below that, you are in the joist manufacturer's territory and, if the span changes, an engineer's.

    If the bathroom is on a slab, this section is mostly good news. The fall is built in the topping, no framing is touched, and the structural risk is close to zero. Spend what you saved on the membrane and the fan.

    If the bathroom is over wood joists on a ground floor, the recess is real work but the consequences are contained. Solid lumber joists can usually take sistered members to carry the lowered subfloor. Budget the extra framing day and move on.

    If the bathroom is on an upper floor over living space, stop and get the joists looked at before you choose anything else. Engineered I-joists and open web trusses have manufacturer rules that are not interchangeable with each other or with solid lumber, and sistering a truss is specifically the wrong move. The failure here does not show up as a leak. It shows up as a sagging ceiling in the room below, months later.

    Slip Resistance Is a Number, Not a Feeling

    Wet floor tile is rated, and the rating has a name. It is DCOF, the dynamic coefficient of friction, and the industry threshold for a level interior floor expected to be walked on wet is 0.42 or higher. Ask the showroom for the number. Do not judge by running your hand across a dry sample, because almost everything feels grippy dry.

    Three things move the number in your favour. A textured or structured surface rather than a polished one. Smaller tile, because the grout lines are traction. And matte or honed finishes rather than polished, which is why polished marble is a beautiful and genuinely poor wet room floor.

    The maintenance trade is worth saying plainly, because the marketing on this topic does not. Smaller tile is safer and needs more cleaning. A wet room is not a lower maintenance bathroom. It is a bathroom with no shower door to squeegee and more grout to scrub, and people who live in one will tell you the second part outweighs the first.

    The Cold Problem, and Why It Is the Real Regret

    The most common complaint from people who actually live with an open wet zone is not leaking. It is cold. A shower enclosure traps steam and holds it around you; an open room does not, so the shower feels drafty in exactly the houses that are air conditioned hard in summer or heated hard in winter. This is solvable, but only at design stage, and only by treating it as three separate problems rather than one vague comfort issue.

    Heat in the floor. In this build an electric heated floor stops being a luxury and becomes the thing that makes the design work. It warms the tile you are standing on, it dries the floor between uses, and it does both without moving air across you. If the budget has to give somewhere, it should not give here.

    Air moving the right way. Size the fan the larger of two ways and take the bigger number. The Home Ventilating Institute puts a bathroom up to 100 square feet at 1 CFM per square foot, and a larger one at 50 CFM per fixture, counting the toilet, the shower and the tub separately. Where mechanical ventilation is required, and it is required in any bathroom without an operable window, residential code sets a floor of 50 CFM intermittent or 20 CFM continuous whatever the size of the room. Plenty of jurisdictions have struck the window exception entirely, so check yours rather than assuming the window counts. Duct it outside rather than into the attic, and put the fan over the wet zone rather than beside the door, because a fan by the door pulls conditioned air across you on its way to the steam.     Containment. A fixed glass panel is not a retreat from the open look. It is the piece that lets you have the open look and still be warm, and it does the water job the curb used to do. A rain head helps for the same reason, because it sprays downward instead of outward and keeps more of the water inside the zone.

    Picture a household in Houston with the thermostat at 76 from March through November. The wet room is beautiful and the shower is miserable, because every degree of steam it makes gets pulled out into a conditioned room within seconds. They end up hanging a shower curtain across a thirty inch opening, which is precisely the thing the design was built to avoid. A heated floor, a panel and the fan in the right place would have cost less than the tile did.

    If your house stays warm most of the year and is rarely conditioned, an open zone with no panel is genuinely comfortable, and the containment argument is much weaker. Build it open. If you run air conditioning most of the year, or you live somewhere with real winters, treat the panel and the heated floor as part of the base cost of the shower, not as upgrades to decide later when the budget is tight. They are the difference between a room you use and a room you photograph.

    Where a Freestanding Tub Can Sit Inside a Wet Zone

    A freestanding tub can share an open wet zone with the shower, and it is one of the best reasons to build one. But it goes on the level part of the floor, outside the sloped shower field. A freestanding tub needs a flat, fully supported base, and the shower field is deliberately not flat. Setting a tub on a quarter inch per foot fall puts it out of level, loads the feet unevenly and makes the overflow behave strangely.

    Three clearances decide whether the layout works.

    At least six inches behind the rim. This is not a code figure, it is a cleaning figure, and in a wet zone it matters more than it does anywhere else. In a room where the whole floor is designed to get wet, the gap behind the tub is the one place that never dries.

    At least 21 inches of clear floor beside it, which is the residential code minimum for clear space at a fixture. Thirty inches is what actually feels right once you are standing there with a towel.

    Filler position settled at rough-in. A floor mounted filler is decided when the floor is opened, not when the tub arrives. Put it where it will not block the path between the tub and the shower, and where its supply penetration sits outside the sloped field and inside the membrane.

    Everything under a tub in a wet zone is tiled and membraned, which answers a question that comes up constantly: does a freestanding tub need tile underneath it? In a wet room the answer is yes, and the waterproofing runs under it too. On size, a 60 inch freestanding tub is usually the longest that still leaves workable clearance on both sides in a standard sized bathroom once the shower zone has taken its share of the floor.

    Picture a 67 inch tub pushed tight to the wall of an open zone because the room was tight and it read better in the drawing. Two inches behind the rim, and the back of the tub becomes a place nobody can reach with anything except a stick and a cloth. Six inches solves it. Three does not, and you find that out in month four.

    What a Wet Room Costs and Where the Extra Money Goes

    The figure you will see quoted everywhere is 20 to 30 percent above a comparable conventional bathroom remodel, or roughly $150 per square foot against $125 for a standard build. It is worth knowing where that number comes from, because it is not what most articles imply. It traces to consumer remodelling cost guides rather than to any primary construction cost dataset, other guides on the same topic quote materially different ranges, and the national homebuilding cost studies do not break out a wet room as a category at all. Treat 20 to 30 percent as a planning assumption to test against real quotes, not as a price. The more useful question is where the premium actually goes, because six line items account for nearly all of it.

    • Membrane, and more of it. A curbless build waterproofs the shower plus a foot past the floor's high point, and a full wet room waterproofs everything. That is materially more area than a conventional shower pan.
    • The framing recess. Zero on a slab, a real line item on joists, and potentially an engineer's fee on an upper floor.
    • The linear drain. Meaningfully more than a standard shower drain, and the reason people talk themselves into a point drain and then lose their tile choice.
    • The heated floor. Optional on paper, not optional in practice, for the reasons in the previous section.
    • A bigger fan and a proper duct run. Sized up and routed outside, which is more work than swapping a fan into an existing hole.
    • Tile labour. If you end up on a point drain and mosaic, you are paying for many more pieces per square foot.

    Two line items go the other way, and they are usually left out of the comparison. You are not buying a shower tray and you are not buying an enclosure. In a small bathroom you are also recovering floor area that a shower box used to eat, which changes what else fits in the room.

    If the bathroom is under about 45 square feet, the math improves quickly, because the floor you get back is a meaningful fraction of the whole room and the waterproofed area you are paying for is small. If the bathroom is already large, you are paying the premium for the look and the access rather than for space, so be clear with yourself about which of those you are buying.

    Everything above is a number, and numbers are what a contractor can quote against. Here they are in one place, in the order they get asked for. Fill this in for your own bathroom and you walk into the conversation with a page to hand over, which is a very different meeting from asking whether a wet room is a good idea.

    6. Exhaust fan CFM, taken as the larger of the two sizing methods.
    7. Tub placement and clearances, if a tub shares the zone.

    1. Establish what is under the floor before anything else. Slab, solid joists, engineered I-joists or open web trusses, and which floor of the house. That single answer moves the budget more than any finish decision you will make.
    2. Fix the drain type and position before you choose tile. Linear at a wall or point drain in the middle. Everything about the tile follows from it, and reversing it after rough-in costs a plumber's day.
    3. Get the membrane extent in writing. Ask your tile setter which TCNA detail they are following, and get the twelve inch rule onto the scope of work rather than into a conversation nobody remembers.
    4. Budget the heated floor, the panel and the fan as part of the shower. Not as upgrades to revisit later. They are what stops the finished room being cold, and cold is the regret people actually report.

    If the tub is the reason you want the open zone in the first place, that is worth pressure testing on its own terms. Whether a freestanding tub is practical for the way you actually use a bathroom is a different question from whether one fits.

    The immediate payoff of doing this in order is a much shorter conversation with your contractor, and quotes you can actually compare, because you are handing every bidder the same specification instead of the same vague idea. The longer payoff is a bathroom you can still walk into in twenty years without renovating it again, which is the thing a curb quietly takes away.
