    Pass One: Map the Room Envelope

    Pass One captures the room as a container: wall lengths, ceiling height, and where the openings sit. You need a metal-blade tape measure, painterโ€™s tape for marking, a pencil, your phone for photos, and a step ladder for anything above shoulder height. Skip vinyl sewing tapes; they stretch and lie.

    Here is the sequence:

    1. Sketch a birdโ€™s-eye outline of the room on paper. It does not need to be to scale, only to have every wall, door, and window on it.
    2. Pick a corner and work clockwise. Measure each wall corner to corner at about 36 inches off the floor, and record to the nearest quarter inch on the sketch.
