    Ranges vary by product line, so confirm the catalog you are buying from. The style choice matters most in one specific place: a window that must handle steam. A casement or awning clears moisture two to three times faster in practice than a hung window of the same size, simply because more of its area opens.

    How to Read a Window Call-Out Before You Order

    With most manufacturers, a four-digit call-out like 2436 reads as feet plus inches: 2 feet 4 inches wide by 3 feet 6 inches tall, so 28 by 42 inches. It is not 24 by 36. Misreading a call-out is one of the quietest ways to order a window that arrives four inches wrong.

    Two more terms decide whether your order fits. The unit size is the window itself, frame included. The rough opening is the framed hole in the wall, and it typically runs about 1/2 inch larger than the unit in each direction, roughly 1/4 inch of shim space per side. Some product lines spec more clearance, so check the manufacturer’s installation sheet before framing. Call-outs can also refer to either the unit size or the opening depending on the maker, so confirm which one the catalog means.

    For those planning a new build or addition, this is the section to hand your framer. Give them the rough opening from the spec sheet of the exact unit you are buying, not a generic chart, and the drywall crew will not be shaving an opening in week six.

    How to Measure a Bathroom Window for Replacement

    Suppliers want the tightest true dimensions of your existing opening, measured at three points each way. Here is the method, exactly as installers run it:

    1. Width, three times. Measure jamb to jamb at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening. Keep the smallest number.
    2. Height, three times. Measure from the head jamb down to the sill at the left, center, and right. Start each height at the high point of a sloped sill. Keep the smallest number.
    3. Check square. Measure both diagonals, corner to opposite corner. If they differ by more than about 1/4 inch, the opening is out of square; flag it with your supplier before ordering.
    4. Check depth. Measure the flat jamb depth without trim. Most insert replacement windows want about 3 1/4 inches to seat properly.

    The smallest-number rule exists because old openings sag and swell; a window sized to the biggest reading simply will not go in. Hand the supplier your exact smallest measurements and let them make the final deductions, since every line has its own rules.

    Say you are replacing the original double-hung in a 1948 hall bath. The width tape reads 25 1/8, 25, and 25 1/16; the heights read 37 3/4, 37 5/8, and 37 11/16; the diagonals land 1/8 inch apart. Your order sheet says 25 by 37 5/8, square opening, and the new sash drops in on a Saturday morning. The reading that mattered was the 25, the one measurement a chart would never give you.

    One fork in the road here: if the existing frame is sound, you are measuring for an insert replacement, jamb to jamb, as above. But if the sill is rotted, the frame is racked past that 1/4 inch tolerance, or you are changing the window size, you are into a full-frame replacement, and the number that matters becomes the rough opening between the studs. Insert when the frame is good, full-frame when it is not; the deciding factor is the wood you cannot see until you pull the trim.

    The Wet-Wall Rulebook: Three Code Numbers That Decide Your Window

    Before privacy, before style, the International Residential Code has three opinions about your bathroom window. We call this the Wet-Wall Rulebook: three tape-measure numbers that produce three verdicts. Run them in order and you know what the inspector will say before drywall goes up.

    Rule one: the 60-inch wet zone decides tempered glass. Under IRC R308.4.5, glazing in walls containing or adjacent to tubs and showers counts as a hazardous location when the bottom edge of the glass sits less than 60 inches above the standing surface; the code then exempts glass that is more than 60 inches, measured horizontally in a straight line, from the water’s edge. In practice: within five feet of the tub or shower and lower than five feet off the floor means safety glazing. Code-required safety glazing carries a small etched mark in the corner naming the standard it meets, CPSC 16 CFR 1201 or ANSI Z97.1, so you can confirm what was actually installed.

    Rule two: 3 square feet decides ventilation. IRC R303.3 wants a bathroom to have at least 3 square feet of window glazing with half of it openable, or, failing that, an exhaust fan ducted to the outdoors, sized per the mechanical chapter at 50 cfm intermittent or 20 cfm continuous. Here the answer forks by where you live: in most states an opening window that clears the numbers lets you skip the fan, but Washington and Oregon, among others, require mechanical ventilation no matter how big the window is.     Rule three: egress is a myth in bathrooms. Emergency escape windows belong to sleeping rooms, basements, and habitable attics under IRC R310. A bathroom owes no egress window, so nobody should talk you into a larger opening to hit the 5.7 square foot egress figure; that number applies to a different room.     Sill Height Does the Privacy Work, Not the Glass

    The standard advice is frosted glass. The better first move is placement: bathroom windows are typically set with the sill 54 to 72 inches above the floor, and at shoulder height or higher, sightlines from outside stop mattering for anyone standing at a normal distance. A short, wide window placed high solves privacy and splash exposure in one decision, which is why the 48 x 24 transom shape shows up over so many tubs.

    Picture a hall bath whose window faces the neighbor’s driveway twenty feet away. The homeowner’s first instinct is a peel-and-stick privacy film, and it is the most common regret in remodel forums: most films read as translucent, not opaque, and at night with the light on they do less than you hope. Raising the replacement window eight inches and switching to factory-obscured glass would have ended the question for good. Film is a patch; placement and etched or textured glass are the fix.

    Two paths, depending on your lot. If a neighbor, street, or walkway sits within about twenty feet of the window, choose factory-obscured or textured glass and keep the sill at 60 inches or higher; you will never think about it again. If the window faces a fenced yard, trees, or open sky, keep the glass clear and let the sill drop as low as the wet-zone rule allows, because the view and the light are worth more than reflex privacy.     Windows Over a Tub or Inside the Shower Zone

    A window inside the wet zone is buildable; it just has different rules. The frame wants to be vinyl or fiberglass rather than wood, the surround gets tiled to the frame with a sloped sill so water sheds, and the glass follows the tempered rule from the Rulebook above. Skip wood trim entirely in a shower; even well-painted casing fails early against daily steam.

    Say your remodel keeps the home’s original vinyl window inside the new shower. One approach that holds up: strip the interior wood trim, tile straight to the frame, then set a removable panel of frosted tempered glass just in front of the window like a small fixed shower screen. The window still opens for ventilation behind it, the neighbor sees a glow instead of a silhouette, and the wood problem is gone because there is no wood left.     The placement fork is simple to state. Inside the wet zone, five feet or less from the water: tempered, obscured or screened, minimal or no wood, awning or casement if you want it to open. Outside the wet zone: any glass, any frame, and the window becomes a design element rather than a compliance item.     When a Stock Size Will Not Work

    Stock windows are cheaper and faster because manufacturers build them by the thousand. Go custom when one of three things is true: your opening is out of square past the shimming tolerance, your home’s openings predate standard sizing, or the design calls for a shape stock lines do not carry. Expect custom to cost more and add weeks of lead time, so make it a choice, not an accident of bad measuring.

    Replacement is also the moment to think past the glass itself.
